Celebration I spoke today to Kate Meyers, who runs an art gallery that just did a show on deaf art. She has discovered something like what I have discovered: that there is satisfaction in celebrating other people's work. She's making about what I am making from her celebratory activities: enough to sustain the gallery. There's a lot of this going on: the whole concert scene, lots of scholarly activity, family storytelling: all efforts to celebrate what someone else has done, to hold it up to light. In John's gospel, there's a bit toward the end where Jesus says goodbye and wishes the disciples well, because he is returning to the Father. And he gives just a glimpse of what goes on in the mind of God: giving glory and being glorified, knowing and being known. This is the most astonishing bit of cosmology -- and the implication is: people can participate in that life, if they want to. It's not in the slightest about rewards or punishments or any of that, just: here is a kind of life. Join in, if you want. BatBlog Archive |
